Pleioblastus viridistriatus
Maximum height: 3 ft.
(More often 1 - 2 ft. for us)
Maximum diameter: .125 in.
(More often < .125 in.)
Minimum temperature: 0ºF
(The roots are at least 10ºF more hardy.)
Digging Season: Late October through December, or until the ground freezes.
This beautiful variegated bamboo makes a great ground cover. It should be mowed to the ground early each spring before shooting to make way for the bright new growth. The old growth can look a little ragged after winter.
It's very resistant to mites due to the undersides of the leaves being coated with fine hairs.
It will grow well in full sun here in zone 5, but the color looks the best when it has afternoon shade so that the color doesn't fade out.
